Why Velocity-Based Training Builds Better Athletes

August 12, 2026 · VERT Sports Therapy

Power is force multiplied by velocity. Most gym programs only train one half of that equation — they add weight and slow everything down. Sport does not happen slowly.

Speed is a trainable quality

When you cap the speed of a movement, you cap the adaptation. Velocity-based work keeps the bar (or the handle) moving fast enough that the nervous system has to recruit high-threshold motor units — the ones you use to sprint, cut, and jump.

Where hydraulics come in

Hydraulic resistance matches the force you produce. Push harder, and it pushes back harder. There is no eccentric load to control, which means less soreness and a much lower barrier to training hard during a rehab block.

Who it is for

This is not just for elite athletes. Older adults who lose power before they lose strength benefit from the exact same principle — and so does anyone coming off an injury who needs to rebuild output without beating up healing tissue.
